italianiqIt is not surprising that the race that brought us the renaissance, the empire of Rome, the aqueduct running water and modern cities is the sharpest one in Europe.

according to an earlier study (2002-06) by Lynn, the well-known but controversial professor of Ulster Univesity, and Finnish scholar Vanhanen, Italians had indeed the highest IQ of all Europeans:

The intelligence scores came from work carried out earlier this decade by Richard Lynn, a British psychologist, and Tatu Vanhanen, a Finnish political scientist, who analysed IQ studies from 113 countries, and from subsequent work by Jelte Wicherts, a Dutch psychologist.

Countries are ranked highest to lowest national IQ score.

With a relative average score of 102, following only Singapore (108), South Korea (106) and Japan (105), among all countries of the world. The European countries following Italy were Iceland and Switzerland (101) and then Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK (100). When I found this ranking I was not surprised at all, as I have travelled with my car in most Western European countries and I came to love Italy, especially Florence that is my favourite destination. I understood that many Italians are brought up seeing the most exquisite exhibitions of fine arts, including architecture, and being acquainted to other expressions of Western civilization like opera. Perhaps it is not coincidental that the oldest European university was established in Bologna. Therefore, as intelligence is, according to an approach, a measure of how well one adjusts to the prevailing civilization, the above study’s findings didn’t come as a surprise to me.
